Our Journey to Learning Spanish as a Family
Learning Spanish has always been something I’ve been passionate about, but now it’s become a family mission. After weeks of consideration and research, we decided to go with TalkBox.Mom as our tool of choice to make Spanish a natural part of our daily lives.
Why TalkBox.Mom?
I’ve had previous experience with learning Spanish. Before meeting Tania eight years ago, I reached a level where I could hold basic conversations with Spanish speakers. Back then, I was so dedicated that I’d wake up at 4 a.m. (sometimes even earlier!) to do language exchanges with people from Colombia. However, over time, my Spanish skills faded as life got busier.
When we decided to dive into learning Spanish as a family, I wanted something practical and immersive—something we could easily integrate into our everyday routines. That’s why TalkBox.Mom stood out. It’s designed for families to start speaking a new language immediately, using real-life phrases instead of isolated words.
What We Ordered
We went all in and ordered a four-box subscription:
The Snacks & Kitchen Box
The Actions, Rooms & Games Box
The First Bathroom Box
The Drinks & Dining Box
To save on shipping (we’re based in the UK), I asked for all the boxes to be delivered in one go. Due to a slight mix-up on their end with the shipping invoice and the overseas weight limit, they combined the content of the four boxes into two lighter boxes, which worked out perfectly. However, I didn’t order the phrasebook, and in hindsight, I wish I had. If you’re ordering overseas, I highly recommend including the phrasebook to complete the experience.

Getting Started
The boxes took about three weeks to arrive, but in the meantime, we had access to the app and the intro videos. I can’t recommend these videos enough; they explain the process thoroughly and help you understand how to use the system effectively. Once the boxes arrived, we dived right in. Each box is divided into three challenges, which makes the process feel achievable and structured.
The first challenge we started with was “Snack Time” from the Snacks & Kitchen Box. This was such a brilliant starting point because it focused on phrases we could immediately use in our daily routine. Instead of learning single words, we jumped straight into practical sentences. Our first phrase was “¿Tienen hambre?” (Are you hungry?). As parents, this is something we ask the kids all the time, so it felt natural to replace the English with Spanish. Now, we only ever ask this in Spanish—a small but exciting win for our family!
Here is a great breakdown of whats in the box.
Our Pick
Real-life language learning for families
✅ Uses phrases in daily life, not vocab lists
✅ Builds routine with your kids naturally
✅ No grammar drills, no stress
How We’re Using TalkBox.Mom
The program recommends learning 1-5 phrases a day, but we found our sweet spot with three phrases per day. On busy days, especially when Tania had a lot on with work, we’d stick to fewer phrases to keep it manageable. Dinner time has become our go-to practice session; it’s when we’re all together and can focus on learning and using the phrases naturally.
Right now, as I write this, we’re working through the second challenge of the first box. We’ve faced a few delays here and there, but the kids are really enjoying it. They understand many of the phrases and will respond when we ask questions in Spanish. While they’re not initiating conversations in Spanish just yet, it’s amazing to see them engaging with the language at such an early stage.
Reflections So Far
