Why We Booked Hotel Irotama

By the time we arrived at Irotama, we’d already experienced some very different sides of Colombia.

We’d explored Cartagena’s colourful streets, spent time in the mountains of Minca and travelled around the Caribbean coast.

What we really wanted next was a few easy days.

No planning.

No transfers.

No trying to work out what to do every morning.

Just somewhere comfortable where the kids could swim and we could relax.

When researching family-friendly resorts near Santa Marta, Hotel Irotama kept appearing as one of the best options.

The combination of pools, beach access, restaurants and family facilities made it stand out immediately.

Looking back, it was exactly the reset we needed.

First Impressions Of Hotel Irotama

The first thing that struck us about Hotel Irotama was the sheer size of the resort.

This isn’t a small boutique hotel tucked away on the coast. It’s a full-scale resort with extensive grounds, multiple accommodation buildings, palm trees, swimming pools, restaurants and direct access to the beach.

From the moment we arrived, it felt like we’d switched into holiday mode.

The grounds were beautifully maintained, the staff were welcoming and the atmosphere felt relaxed from the start. Unlike some larger resorts that can feel crowded or overwhelming, Hotel Irotama had plenty of space to spread out and enjoy yourself.

For families travelling with children, that’s a huge advantage. There was enough room for the kids to explore and burn off energy without ever feeling cramped, while still maintaining the sense that everything was safe and contained within the resort.

Is Hotel Irotama Family Friendly?

In our opinion, absolutely.

In fact, we’d go as far as saying that families are one of the resort’s core audiences. Throughout our stay, we saw parents and children making full use of the pools, restaurants, gardens and beach access.

Everything felt designed to make a family holiday easy.

Whether it was the spacious grounds, the range of facilities or simply the relaxed atmosphere, the resort seemed to remove many of the little stresses that can sometimes come with travelling as a family.

Our Room

Our room was spacious, comfortable and exactly what we needed for a short family stay.

After months of moving between destinations, there’s something surprisingly satisfying about checking into a room where everything simply works. No unexpected issues, no compromises and no need to immediately start solving problems.

The air conditioning was excellent, which is particularly important on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean and everything felt well maintained.

Most importantly, it provided a comfortable base between pool sessions, beach walks and family downtime.

While the resort itself is undoubtedly the main attraction, having a room that allowed everyone to relax and recharge definitely helped make the stay more enjoyable.

The Pools Were the Star of the Show

If you asked our kids what they remember most about Hotel Irotama, the answer would be immediate:

The pools.

We spent a huge amount of our time there. Some mornings started beside the pool, many afternoons ended there and most days involved at least one conversation that sounded something like:

“Can we go back to the pool now?”

For travelling families, that’s usually a good sign.

The pools were large, clean and spread throughout different areas of the resort, which meant they rarely felt overcrowded. The atmosphere was relaxed and family-oriented, with plenty of children enjoying themselves without it ever becoming noisy or chaotic.

After spending time in more adventurous destinations such as Minca, having a few days where entertainment was as simple as swimming, relaxing and enjoying the sunshine was exactly what we needed.

Is Hotel Irotama Good for Kids?

Definitely.

The combination of multiple pools, direct beach access, open green spaces and family-friendly facilities makes Hotel Irotama one of the easiest places we’ve stayed with children in Colombia.

Everything about the resort encourages families to slow down, relax and enjoy time together. For parents, that’s often just as valuable as the destination itself.

The Beach Was Exactly What We Needed

While the pools were undoubtedly the kids’ favourite part of the resort, the beach was a close second.

One of the biggest advantages of Hotel Irotama is its direct beachfront location.

Within minutes you can go from your room, to the pool, to having your feet in the Caribbean Sea.

After spending time in Santa Marta itself, we actually preferred the beach around Irotama.

It felt quieter.

Less crowded.

And much more relaxed.

We found ourselves taking morning walks along the sand, watching the waves roll in and simply enjoying the slower pace of life.

The sea was generally calm enough for swimming and the beach felt family-friendly throughout our stay.

For us, the combination of beach and pool access was what made Irotama stand out.

You never felt limited to one or the other.

Breakfast Was One Of The Highlights

The Breakfast Deserves a Mention

I know breakfast isn’t always the first thing people mention in a hotel review, but in this case it genuinely deserves its own section.

After months of travelling through Latin America, we’ve eaten our fair share of hotel breakfasts. Some have been excellent, many have been forgettable and a few have been little more than coffee and pastries.

Hotel Irotama’s was one of the better ones.

The selection was impressive, there was plenty of variety and it catered well for families. More importantly, it made our mornings easy. We could wake up, head to breakfast and know that everyone would find something they enjoyed before deciding whether the day would be spent at the pool, on the beach or a combination of both.

That’s exactly the kind of simplicity we were looking for.

Is Breakfast Worth It?

Absolutely.

If breakfast is included in your booking, it’s a fantastic bonus. If it isn’t, we’d seriously consider adding it because it made our mornings significantly more relaxed and enjoyable.

Why This Stay Was Extra Special

This wasn’t just another hotel stay during our travels.

It also happened to be part of a birthday celebration.

After months of moving around South America, Hotel Irotama felt like the perfect place to mark the occasion. There was something refreshing about pressing pause on the adventure for a few days and simply enjoying where we were.

No long bus journeys.

No airport transfers.

No constantly planning the next destination.

Instead, it was just family time. Swimming, good food, beach walks and the chance to enjoy being together without any real agenda.

Looking back, those slower moments are often the ones we remember most. Not necessarily the biggest attractions or the most famous sights, but the simple experiences that give you time to appreciate where you are and who you’re with.

Is Hotel Irotama Worth the Money?

In our opinion, yes.

Particularly for families.

You’re not simply paying for a room. You’re paying for access to multiple pools, direct beach access, spacious resort grounds, family-friendly facilities and, perhaps most importantly, convenience.

Could you stay somewhere cheaper?

Absolutely.

But if you’re looking for a few days of comfort and relaxation during a Colombia trip, we think Hotel Irotama offers good value for what it provides.
