Palomino and Minca ended up being two of our favourite places in Colombia.
We spent an entire month living in Palomino before heading inland to Minca, swapping Caribbean beaches for jungle-covered mountains, waterfalls and coffee farms.
Although they’re only around 80km apart, there isn’t a direct bus between the two destinations. Fortunately, the journey is still straightforward once you know where to change.
In this guide, we’ll explain every way to travel from Palomino to Minca, including the cheapest option, journey times and what we’d recommend after travelling around Colombia ourselves.

What's the Best Way to Get From Palomino to Minca?
For most travellers, we’d recommend taking a local bus from Palomino towards Santa Marta before changing onto a colectivo for Minca.
It sounds more complicated than it actually is.
The buses run regularly along the Caribbean coast, and colectivos leave frequently for Minca throughout the day.
It’s the route used by both locals and backpackers and is by far the best value.
Step 1: Palomino to Santa Marta
Unlike larger cities, Palomino doesn’t have a central bus station.
Instead, you’ll simply wait beside the main highway that runs through town and flag down any bus travelling towards Santa Marta.
Several companies operate this route throughout the day, with buses passing regularly.
The journey takes around 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic, and tickets are usually inexpensive.
If possible, ask the driver to drop you at Mamatoco, rather than continuing into Santa Marta’s city centre.
This saves both time and money, as it’s much closer to where the colectivos for Minca depart.
Step 2: Mamatoco to Minca
From Mamatoco, it’s only a short taxi ride or walk to the colectivo departure point for Minca.
These shared vehicles leave regularly once full and are the most popular way to reach the mountain town.
The journey into Minca takes around 45 minutes, climbing steadily into the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Our Experience
We loved both destinations, but for completely different reasons.
Palomino was all about slow mornings, beach walks, river tubing and spending time outdoors.
Minca offered cooler temperatures, jungle scenery, coffee farms and some of the most relaxing sunsets we experienced in Colombia.
Moving between the two felt like experiencing two completely different sides of the country in a single afternoon.
Taking a Taxi
If you’re travelling with children, lots of luggage or simply prefer a door-to-door journey, you can hire a taxi.
Some drivers will take you directly from Palomino to Minca without needing to change in Santa Marta.
It’s considerably more expensive than public transport, but for families sharing the fare, it can be worthwhile.
Private Transfers
Private transfers can also be arranged through local tour companies or your accommodation.
These are ideal if you’re travelling in a group or arriving on a tighter schedule.
They’ll collect you directly from your hotel in Palomino and drive you straight to your accommodation in Minca.

Is the Journey Safe?
Yes.
This is a popular tourist route and one travelled by backpackers, families and locals every day.
We spent a month in Palomino before continuing through northern Colombia and never encountered any problems on the transport routes.
As always, keep valuables with you and use normal travel precautions.
What to Pack
The journey isn’t particularly long, but we’d still recommend bringing:

- Snacks
- Cash for buses and colectivos
- Portable charger
- Insect repellent
- Comfortable walking shoes
Remember that Minca sits at a much higher elevation than Palomino, so the weather is usually cooler.

If you’re already travelling along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, we’d absolutely recommend visiting both destinations.
Palomino offers:
