There are no direct buses between the two destinations, but the journey is straightforward. Most travellers simply take a colectivo back to Santa Marta before catching a bus heading east towards Palomino.

What's the Best Way to Get from Minca to Palomino?
For most travellers, the easiest option is to reverse the route you took into Minca.
Start by taking a colectivo back down to Santa Marta before catching a bus towards Palomino from the main highway or transport terminal.
The connections are frequent, inexpensive and used daily by both locals and tourists.
Step 1: Minca to Santa Marta
Colectivos leave regularly from the centre of Minca throughout the day.
These shared vehicles are the standard way of travelling between Minca and Santa Marta and usually depart once they’re full.
The journey takes around 45 minutes as you descend from the Sierra Nevada mountains back towards the coast.
Expect to pay approximately 12,000–15,000 COP.
Step 2: Santa Marta to Palomino
Once back in Santa Marta, catch any bus travelling east towards Riohacha or Maicao.
These buses pass through Palomino and run regularly throughout the day.
The journey takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, with tickets typically costing 14,000–20,000 COP.
Simply tell the driver you’re getting off in Palomino.
Our Experience
Although the journey is fairly short, it feels like travelling between two completely different parts of Colombia.
Minca is all about jungle, waterfalls, coffee farms and cooler mountain temperatures.
Palomino, meanwhile, offers long beaches, river tubing, surfing and a much slower Caribbean atmosphere.
We loved spending time in both and would happily include them together again on a future trip.
Taking a Private Taxi
If you’re travelling with children or lots of luggage, you can arrange a private taxi directly from Minca to Palomino.
This removes the need to change transport in Santa Marta and can be worthwhile if you’re splitting the cost between several people.
Journey time is around 2 hours, depending on traffic.
Private Transfers
Some accommodations and local tour companies can also arrange private transfers.
These usually include hotel pickup in Minca and drop-off at your accommodation in Palomino.
Although they’re the most expensive option, they’re also the easiest.

This is a well-travelled route used daily by tourists heading between Colombia’s Caribbean coast and the Sierra Nevada mountains.
We travelled extensively throughout northern Colombia and found the transport network easy to use.
As always, keep valuables with you and avoid travelling late at night if possible.
