Family Spanish Lessons: How We Stay Motivated as a Family
Ever started learning a language, only to give up after a few weeks?
Staying motivated is one of the biggest challenges when learning a new skill, and family Spanish lessons are no different. But when you get it right, learning Spanish as a family becomes something exciting, rather than just another task on the to-do list.
We’ve been on this journey for a couple months now (21/02/25), and while motivation has its ups and downs, we’ve found a few things that help us stay consistent, engaged, and actually enjoy the process. Here’s how we make family Spanish lessons fun, practical, and something we actually stick with.
1. We Make Family Spanish Lessons Part of Our Routine
One of the biggest mistakes we made early on was trying to “fit in” learning Spanish whenever we had time.
Spoiler alert: we never had time.
Now, we schedule our Spanish learning just like we would a meal or bedtime routine. It doesn’t have to be a huge commitment, but we make sure to practice every day, even if it’s just 5-10 minutes of Spanish conversation while making breakfast.
Our daily Spanish routine looks like this:
✅ Morning: Use Spanish greetings & phrases while getting ready.
✅ Meal times: Practice saying what we’re eating in Spanish.
✅ Evening: Play a quick Spanish game or watch a short video together.
✅ Bedtime: Read a Spanish storybook or use a language-learning app for a few minutes.
By weaving Spanish into our daily routine and conversations, it doesn’t feel like a chore, it just becomes part of life.
2. We Use Multiple Learning Methods (Not Just One App)
If you’ve ever tried to stick with a single learning app, you know how easy it is to lose motivation fast. That’s why we mix up our learning methods, so things stay fresh and engaging.
Our Spanish Learning Stack:
TalkBox.Mom – Helps us speak Spanish naturally at home.
Dreaming Spanish – Fun, engaging videos designed for immersion.
Refold – Focused on comprehension & real-world vocabulary.
Anki Flashcards – Perfect for remembering new words.
Spanish Storybooks – Great for bedtime reading with the kids.
By using a variety of tools, we avoid boredom and stay motivated longer. Some days we watch videos, other days we focus on speaking, and sometimes we just read together, it keeps things interesting!
3. We Play Games & Make It Fun
Let’s be real, kids (and adults) learn best when they’re having fun. If family Spanish lessons start feeling like school, motivation plummets. So we decided to make learning as interactive as possible.
Fun Spanish learning activities we do:
✅ Scavenger Hunt: Hide flashcards around the house; kids find them & say the words in Spanish.
✅ Funny Accent Challenge: Each person has to say a Spanish phrase in a silly voice.
✅ Drawing & Guessing Game: One person draws a word in Spanish, and the others guess.
✅ Role-Playing: We pretend we’re ordering at a restaurant or shopping in a Spanish-speaking country. (The kids use any words they know best)
These games don’t feel like learning, but they reinforce real-life vocabulary in a way that sticks. Find ways for you to make learnign feel fun and not like rote learning.
4. We Celebrate Small Wins

Learning Spanish as a family is a long-term journey, so if you’re only focused on fluency, you’ll burn out fast. Instead, we celebrate the small wins to keep our motivation high.
Our small win milestones:
✅ First full sentence spoken in Spanish.
✅ Recognising words in a Spanish TV show.
✅ Having a basic Spanish Convo with our Spanish Friend.
✅ Completing a full week of Spanish practice.
Acknowledging these moments helps us see progress and keeps us excited to keep going.
5. We Use Spanish in Real Life Whenever Possible
Nothing is more motivating than actually using what we learn.
How we use Spanish in real life:
✅ Practicing at home – We try to use Spanish words instead of English whenever we can.
✅ Watching TV & listening to music – Immersion is key, even if we don’t understand everything yet.
✅ Writing simple notes to each other in Spanish – A fun way to reinforce learning!
When learning Spanish feels useful, motivation comes naturally.
