Hiking in Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a breathtaking destination in northern Montenegro. Known for its towering peaks, glacial lakes, and dramatic canyons, it’s a haven for hikers and nature lovers. During our trip, we used Žabljak as our base to explore this natural wonderland, and it quickly became one of the highlights of our Montenegro adventure. Here’s a full guide to our time in Durmitor, including what we did, tips for visiting with kids, and why this park should be on your list.

Our Journey to Durmitor

Biograd national park

Stop 1: Biogradska Gora National Park

Before reaching Durmitor, as we were travelling from Podgorica  we made a stop at Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of Europe’s last primeval forests.

  • Lake Biograd: This peaceful glacial lake is surrounded by lush greenery and offers an easy, family-friendly trail. The kids loved spotting fish in the clear water and exploring the shaded paths.
  • Why It’s Worth Visiting: It was the perfect spot to stretch our legs after leaving Podgorica and a tranquil start to our northern adventure.

Arrival in Žabljak

After a two-hour drive from Biogradska Gora, we arrived in Žabljak, a small mountain town and the gateway to Durmitor National Park.

  • Accommodation Tip: Our stay was idyllic, but we were on the first floor of a shared house, something the Airbnb listing didn’t make clear. Always double-check accommodation details before booking!

What We Did in Durmitor National Park

1. Lake Crno (Black Lake)

Our first stop was Lake Crno, the park’s most famous glacial lake.

  • The Experience: Even though it was busy, the lake’s vastness made it easy to escape the crowds. We avoided the main path, found a quiet spot for a picnic, and even went for a swim. The water was refreshing and crystal-clear—a must-do for anyone visiting the lake.
  • Why It’s a Must-Visit: The serene beauty of Black Lake and the surrounding forest makes it a perfect destination for a relaxed day of hiking and family fun.

2. Tara Canyon

The next day, we explored the Tara River Canyon, Europe’s deepest canyon and one of Durmitor’s most iconic landmarks.

What We Did:

    • Stopped for ice cream after the kids begged for a treat.
    • Took in the stunning views of the canyon, which truly live up to the hype.
    • Researched and found a secluded wild water swimming spot, where we spent a peaceful afternoon swimming and relaxing.

Why It’s Special: The canyon offers jaw-dropping views, and finding a hidden swimming spot made it even more memorable.

Why Durmitor Was a Breath of Fresh Air

After 10 days in Montenegro’s crowded beach areas, Durmitor was the perfect antidote. The north’s cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and pristine nature felt like stepping into a different world—a cross between the Canadian Rockies and the Alps.

The park’s peaceful atmosphere and incredible landscapes gave us the chance to slow down and truly appreciate Montenegro’s natural beauty.

Tips for Visiting Durmitor National Park

Tara Canyon

  1. Pack for All Weather: Even in summer, temperatures can drop in the mountains. Bring layers and rain gear just in case.
  2. Go Off the Beaten Path: While popular spots like Black Lake are a must, don’t be afraid to explore lesser-known trails and hidden swimming spots.
  3. Bring Snacks and Water: Facilities are limited in some areas of the park, so come prepared.
  4. Plan Your Route: The park is vast, so decide which areas you want to visit ahead of time to make the most of your trip.
