Cuenca ended up being one of our favourite cities in Ecuador.
After spending time in places like Quito, Baños and the coast, Cuenca felt different. The city has a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful colonial architecture and a pace of life that immediately makes you want to slow down.
It’s also one of the easiest cities in Ecuador to explore as a family. The historic centre is walkable, there are plenty of parks and cafés, and most attractions are close enough that you don’t spend your entire day travelling between them.
During our time in Cuenca, we quickly realised that where you stay can have a big impact on your experience. Some hotels place you right in the heart of the historic centre, while others offer quieter locations with more space for families.

Most families visiting Cuenca for the first time will be happiest staying in or near the Historic Centre, where you’ll be within walking distance of parks, restaurants, museums and many of the city’s most famous attractions.
Where To Stay In Cuenca With Kids
One of the things we loved most about Cuenca was how easy it was to explore on foot.
Unlike some larger Latin American cities, you don’t need to spend hours in taxis getting between attractions. Choosing the right area means you’ll be within walking distance of parks, cafés, restaurants and many of the city’s most interesting sights.
For families, we’d focus on three areas:
Historic Centre – the heart of Cuenca and our recommendation for most first-time visitors.
Tomebamba River – scenic, relaxed and perfect if you enjoy riverside walks and cafés.
Modern Cuenca – newer hotels, shopping centres and larger family-friendly facilities.
If it were our first visit again, we’d stay somewhere close to the Historic Centre without hesitation.

Where We'd Stay
If we were returning to Cuenca as a family tomorrow, we’d probably choose TRYP by Wyndham Cuenca Zahir for the balance of comfort, value and location.
For a special occasion, we’d be tempted by Mansión Alcázar.
And if we planned to stay for several weeks, we’d likely look at an apartment-style option such as Apart Hotel Norte for the extra space and flexibility.
What Area Should Families Stay In?
For most visitors, we’d recommend staying either:

These areas offer the best mix of walkability, restaurants, attractions and family-friendly atmosphere.
