If you’re wondering what to pack for Colombia, the key is packing for multiple climates.
You’ll likely need:
- lightweight clothes for hot, humid areas like Cartagena
- breathable layers for cities like Medellín
- light rain protection depending on the season
- comfortable walking shoes for everyday travel
Colombia isn’t one temperature, it changes a lot depending on where you go.

Why Packing for Colombia Is Tricky
This caught us off guard.
Colombia isn’t just one climate, it’s multiple in one trip.
You can go from:
- hot and humid (Cartagena)
- to mild spring-like weather (Medellín)
- to cooler, greener regions (coffee region)
👉 sometimes within a few days
So instead of packing for a destination…
👉 you’re packing for transitions
How Our Packing Changed as We Travelled Colombia
When we first arrived in Colombia, we packed like we were heading somewhere consistently warm.
That lasted about two days.
We started in Medellín, where the weather felt great during the day, but cooler in the evenings than we expected. Then we moved to Cartagena, and suddenly everything felt too heavy, too warm, and honestly a bit uncomfortable.
By the time we reached the coffee region, we’d figured it out properly.
👉 Colombia isn’t about packing for one place
👉 it’s about packing for how often you move between them
We ended up wearing the same core outfits on repeat:
- lightweight tops during the day
- a light layer in the evenings
- something waterproof we could throw on quickly
Everything else just stayed in the bag.
If we were doing it again, we’d pack less, but make sure everything works across climates.
What to Pack for Cartagena (Hot & Humid)
Cartagena is exactly what you expect:
👉 hot
👉 humid
👉 sweaty within minutes
What to wear in Cartagena
- lightweight t-shirts / tank tops
- breathable shorts or dresses
- sandals or breathable shoes
- swimwear
- sunglasses + hat
👉 Heavy fabrics will feel uncomfortable fast
What to Pack for Medellín (Spring Weather Year-Round)
Medellín is often called the “City of Eternal Spring”
…but it’s not always warm.
What to wear in Medellín
- t-shirts
- light jumper or hoodie
- lightweight trousers or alternatives to jeans
- trainers
👉 Evenings can feel cooler than expected
What to Pack for the Coffee Region
This was one of our favourite areas, but also where the weather felt most unpredictable.
You’ll get:
- sunshine
- cloud cover
- sudden rain
Colombia coffee region packing list

👉 Think practical, not stylish
What to Pack for Colombia’s Beaches (Palomino & Caribbean Coast)

You’ll spend most of your time:
👉 in swimwear
👉 in lightweight clothes
👉 or barefoot
What to wear on Colombia’s Caribbean coast
- swimwear
- loose breathable clothing
- flip flops or sandals
- lightweight cover-up
- sunscreen
👉 This is where we realised we packed far too much
What to Pack for Colombia (Rain & Seasons)
Colombia doesn’t have traditional seasons.
Rain can happen:
- any time of year
- usually in short bursts
Colombia rainy weather packing list

- quick-dry clothing
- spare socks
- optional waterproof bag cover
👉 You don’t need heavy rain gear, just flexible layers
Travel Insurance for Colombia (What We Actually Use)
One thing we didn’t fully think through at the start of our trip was travel insurance, and it’s something we wouldn’t skip now, especially in a country like Colombia where you’re moving between very different regions.
When you’re travelling between places like Medellín, Cartagena and the coffee region, plans can change quickly, so having something flexible matters more than you expect.
When we were looking into options, SafetyWing stood out because it’s built more for longer-term travel rather than fixed trips, which suits the way a lot of people move around Colombia.
What’s useful is that:
- it covers multiple countries without needing to reset your policy
- it includes emergency medical coverage (which is the main thing most people care about)
- you can extend it while you’re already travelling
- and it’s fairly straightforward compared to more traditional insurance options
It’s one of those things you hope you never need, but after travelling for months with kids, it’s not something we’d leave out again.

You don’t want more stuff…you want less, but better

- wipes (used constantly)
👉 Keep things simple and adaptable
Essential Travel Gear for Colombia (What We Actually Used Daily)
Over time, we realised it wasn’t about how much we packed, it was about what we actually used.
These made a real difference:
- Packing cubes → kept everything organised
- Daypack/backpack → used every day
- Reusable water bottles → especially in hotter regions
- Compact rain jacket → used more than expected
And the two things that made travel noticeably easier:
- Travel insurance (SafetyWing)
- eSIM (Airalo)
👉 These aren’t extras, they remove friction from your trip
What NOT to Pack for Colombia
Don’t bring:
- heavy jeans
- too many shoes
- thick jumpers
- “just in case” outfits
👉 You’ll carry more than you use
