What's the Best Way to Get from Minca to Santa Marta?
For most travellers, we’d recommend taking the colectivo.
These shared taxis leave regularly from the centre of Minca throughout the day and travel directly to Santa Marta.
They’re inexpensive, reliable and don’t usually require booking in advance.
Taking the Colectivo
The colectivo is by far the most common way to travel between Minca and Santa Marta.
Vehicles leave from the centre of town once enough passengers have boarded.
The journey takes around 45–60 minutes, descending through the Sierra Nevada mountains before arriving back in Santa Marta.
The scenery along the way is beautiful, particularly during the first half of the journey as you leave the jungle behind and head back towards the Caribbean coast.

Where Does the Colectivo Stop?
Most colectivos arrive near the Mercado Público (Public Market) area of Santa Marta.
From here you can:
- Take a taxi to your accommodation
- Catch a bus towards Palomino or Riohacha
- Continue to Cartagena
- Travel to Santa Marta Airport
If you’re staying in El Rodadero or Bello Horizonte, it’s usually easiest to take a short taxi or Uber from the drop-off point.
Our Experience
Leaving Minca almost felt like leaving a different country.
Within less than an hour we went from cool mountain air, jungle-covered hills and coffee farms back to the heat and bustle of Santa Marta.
Although we loved both destinations, they offered completely different experiences.
The journey itself was simple, inexpensive and far easier than we’d expected.
Taking a Taxi
If you’re travelling with children, several bags or simply prefer a door-to-door journey, taxis are widely available.
The drive takes around 45 minutes, and you’ll be dropped directly at your hotel, the airport or the bus terminal.
For families or groups, splitting the fare often makes this a worthwhile option.
Shared Tourist Shuttles
Some hotels and tour companies also operate shared shuttle services.
These normally include hotel pickup in Minca and can be booked in advance.
They’re slightly more expensive than the colectivo but offer extra convenience.
Driving Yourself
If you’ve rented a car, driving back to Santa Marta is straightforward.
The road is fully paved and generally in good condition, although it contains several steep bends as you descend from Minca.
Allow approximately 45 minutes for the drive.
